Semaphore Extension
A coastal cottage with a growing family in it, a deep block behind it, and nowhere to put anybody.
The brief
Keep the cottage frontage exactly as the street knows it, and put the family's real living space at the rear, opening to a garden that had never been used properly.
The constraint
Coastal exposure changes the specification. Fixings, flashings, glazing and external finishes all have to be selected for salt air, and the difference between doing that properly and not shows up within five years.
The work
A rear addition with a covered alfresco that works as a genuine second living room rather than a paved afterthought. Sightlines were set so the kitchen bench looks straight down the yard.
The result
The house gained the space without losing the character that made them buy it, and the family stayed in the street they wanted their kids to grow up in.

We can usually arrange a walk-through of a completed home, and put you in touch with the owners. It is the most useful hour you will spend choosing a builder.
